MYMENSINGH, BANGLADESH – A tragic incident of workplace violence and negligence unfolded in the Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh on the evening of December 29, 2025, leaving one Ansar member dead and another in police custody.

The victim, identified as Bajendra Biswas (42), was fatally shot with a shotgun by his colleague, Noman Mia, while on duty at a garment factory. The incident has raised serious questions regarding firearm safety protocols and discipline among security personnel deployed in industrial zones.

The Incident

The shooting occurred around 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Sultana Sweaters Limited factory (a concern of the Labib Group) located in the Mehrabari area of Bhaluka. Both Biswas and Mia were deployed there as part of a 20-member Ansar security team.

According to eyewitness accounts and police reports, the two men were seated together in a room at the factory premises. What began as a casual interaction turned deadly when Noman Mia pointed his issue shotgun at Biswas.

APC Md. Azahar Ali, an eyewitness and fellow Ansar member, reported a chilling exchange immediately preceding the gunshot. He stated that Noman pressed the barrel of the shotgun against Biswas’s left thigh and asked, “Guli kore dei?” (Shall I shoot?). Moments later, the weapon discharged.

Immediate Aftermath

The close-range shot inflicted a severe wound to Biswas’s left thigh, causing massive blood loss. Colleagues at the scene rushed him to the Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex in critical condition. Despite emergency efforts, the on-duty doctor declared him dead upon arrival, citing excessive hemorrhage as the cause of death.

Following the shooting, the accused, Noman Mia, reportedly attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by police shortly after.

Profiles of the Involved Parties

  • The Victim: Bajendra Biswas was the son of Pobitro Biswas from Kadirpur village in the Sylhet Sadar upazila. He had been serving as an Ansar member to support his family.
  • The Accused: Noman Mia (29) hails from Baluturi Bazar in the Taherpur police station area of Sunamganj district. He is the son of Lutfur Rahman.

Police Investigation and Legal Action

The Bhaluka Model Police Station acted swiftly, arresting Noman Mia and seizing the weapon used in the incident.

  • Official Statement: Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Jahidul Islam confirmed the arrest, noting that the initial investigation suggests the shooting might have occurred during a “playful” or negligent moment (locally referred to as dustumi), which turned fatal due to the mishandling of a loaded firearm.
  • Autopsy: The body of the deceased was sent to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
  • Inquiry Committee: A three-member investigation committee has been formed to probe whether there was any underlying dispute between the two men or if this was purely a case of gross negligence.

Broader Context

This incident highlights the critical need for stricter firearms handling training for auxiliary security forces like the Ansar, who are frequently deployed to guard vital industrial sectors in Bangladesh. While initial reports point to an accidental discharge during horseplay, authorities are investigating all angles to rule out premeditated intent.

The tragic death of Bajendra Biswas serves as a grim reminder of the lethal consequences of weapon mishandling in the workplace.
