NARSINGDI, BANGLADESH – A grim atmosphere prevails in the Palash Upazila of Narsingdi following the brutal murder of a 40-year-old grocery store owner, Moni Chakraborty. The victim was hacked to death on his way home Monday night (January 5, 2026), sparking outrage and protests among the local business community.

Incident Details

The attack occurred between 9:00 PM and 11:00 PM in Sultanpur village, located in the Charsindur Union. The victim, identified as Moni Chakraborty (also known as Sarat Chakraborty Moni), was the son of the late Madan Thakur and a long-time resident of the area. He owned a well-known grocery store in the Charsindur market.

According to witnesses and police reports, Moni was returning home on his motorcycle after closing his shop for the night. As he reached the gate of his residence, assailants lying in wait ambushed him. He was struck repeatedly on the back of the head with sharp weapons.

Investigators noted a key detail suggesting the attack was premeditated rather than a crime of opportunity: the victim’s motorcycle, mobile phone, and cash were found intact at the scene. This has led police to suspect a targeted killing rather than a robbery gone wrong.

Police Response and Investigation

Locals rushed a critically injured Moni to the Palash Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians pronounced him dead. His body was subsequently transferred to the Narsingdi Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

  • Legal Action: The victim’s father has filed a murder case against unknown perpetrators at the Palash Police Station.
  • Investigation: Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahed Al Mamun confirmed that law enforcement has inspected the crime scene. While several suspects have reportedly been detained for questioning, authorities have not yet confirmed the specific motive behind the killing.

Public Outcry

Moni Chakraborty was described by locals as a peaceful and respected figure in the community. Following the news of his death, merchants and business owners in the Charsindur market organized human chains and protest rallies, demanding the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible.

The incident has also raised alarm within the local minority community, as reports surfaced of another Hindu businessman being killed in Manirampur, Jashore, on the same night. Residents and family members are urging the administration to ensure a transparent investigation and swift justice.
