An 85-year-old retired school teacher, Shri Nonigopal Sarkar, and his family have allegedly been attacked for refusing to pay extortion money. The incident took place in Moishani village, Ward No. 7, Samudoykathi Union, Swarupkathi (Nesarabad), Pirojpur district.

* Attack on the Victim’s Son:

° Shri Shambhu Sarkar, son of Nonigopal Sarkar, was allegedly beaten by Md. Noyon Gazi, a resident of the same village.

° The assault reportedly left him seriously injured.

* Reason for the Attack:

° According to the victim’s family, Noyon Gazi and his associates had been pressuring them to transfer ownership of certain land properties.

° When they refused, on March 18, Noyon Gazi and five others came to Shambhu Sarkar’s house.

° They demanded 500,000 BDT (5 lakh taka) and, upon refusal, brutally assaulted him.

Current Condition of the Victim

* Shambhu Sarkar has been admitted to the Upazila Health Complex in a critical condition.

When journalists attempted to take photographs at the hospital, Shambhu Sarkar’s wife expressed deep frustration and despair, saying:

“What’s the point of taking pictures? There will be no justice. We are suffering this oppression because we are a minority.”
