JHENAI DAH, BANGLADESH – In a harrowing incident that has shocked the local community, a 44-year-old Hindu widow was subjected to gang rape, physical torture, and public humiliation in the Kaliganj Upazila of Jhenaidah district.

The incident, which took place late Saturday night, involved the victim being raped inside her home before being dragged outside, tied to a tree, and having her hair forcibly cut by the assailants.

The victim, who lives with her 10-year-old son in a village within the Kaliganj municipality, was reportedly targeted by a group of local men. According to the case statement filed with the police, two relatives were visiting the victim’s house at the time of the attack.

Under the pretense of inquiring about the visitors, two men—identified as Shahin and Hasan—entered the premises. They reportedly locked the visiting relatives in one room to prevent them from intervening. The attackers then took the woman to another room where she was gang-raped.

The brutality did not end there. Following the assault inside the house, the perpetrators dragged the woman outside. She was tied to a betel nut tree in the compound, where the attackers severely beat her and cut off her hair—a deliberate act often intended to inflict social shame and psychological trauma.

Rescue and Police Action

Local residents discovered the woman in a critical condition the following morning. They rescued her and immediately rushed her to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where she is currently undergoing treatment.

On Monday afternoon, the survivor filed a formal case at the Kaliganj Police Station, naming four individuals as the accused. Following the filing of the complaint, police launched an immediate operation and arrested one of the prime suspects, identified as Hasan (45), a resident of the same village.
